BBS News: Y2K

BBS_news-header

We’ve made it… the BBS has made it… and mankind is still alive!

Phew, short of a few minor bugs (date- and age-specific bulletins), the HMVH Corporation BBS is largely Y2k compliant and has gracefully slipped into a new millennium. Unfortunately, the All- and NewFiles lists don’t show up with a New Files Scan anymore but – otherwise – do let us us if there is anything we may have missed.

Also: All regular and registered users have been upgraded to life-time Executive Members.

BBS News: FIVE YEARS

BBS_news-header

Today marks the FIFTH year of the HMVH Corporation BBS online, and this shall unfortunately be its last as well. The only reason this thing is being kept alive is for the sake of sorting our huge image collection, and we’re also keen to see what will happen after Y2k – in fact, the very program that generates these news bulletins won’t know what to do when the year 2000 rolls along.

Let’s hope for the best, or we’ll just have to keep changing the date back to 1999?

BBS News: THE DEMISE

BBS_news-header

Followers and friends, lend me your ears (those of you still left)!

The HMVH Corporation BBS is nearing the end of its life in its current guise.

There are many reasons: The lack of callers, RemoteAccess is NOT Y2k compliant (should be interesting to see what happens when 01-01-00 rolls along), a change in personal circumstances which will invariably mean another move of premises sometime soon, amongst others. But, fear not (or rather: Be afraid, be very afraid), as far as we’re concerned, the HMVH Corporation BBS will continue to thrive (?) on the WWW, and this machine is being kept alive purely for personal amusement, and as a labour of love. We will, however, continue to add files (which will eventually feature on the WWW).

Watch this space for details!

BBS News: WE’RE BA-ACK!

BBS_news-header

One faulty phone line laterĀ (thanks to Industrial Action – I just call it Affirmatives in Action – and a sabotaged line) and a few weeks busy with another time-consuming project – nevermind work – we have returned to the land of the connected.

BTW: We’ve decided to dramatically increase the download limits in your favour. Enjoy the new material!

Cyberia 3: Don’t Stop ‘Til I Come

cyberia_header1

Cyberia had become a quasi-religious way of life — far more than just a maudlin frame of mind or a one-way trip through an imaginary escape hatch out of the harshness of the material world.

Cyberia became real.

We could see it through the black light and smell it through bubblegum-flavoured smoke. We could touch it and taste it and hold it and fuck it. It was the time when the Matrix became more than just William Gibson’s terrifying nightmare, the time of an additional workload and minions, when Garbage came to town, and when being commissioned by professionals in the business resulted in an unrelated “series of discs to take your clothes off to”.

Blurb: “Following the surprising success of ‘Cyberia’ and ‘Cyberia 2.01’, we proudly present ‘Cyberia 3’ to complement the previous two. We originally intended to compile this album at a much later stage, but when we realised what excellent music had suddenly hit the scene – we just couldn’t fucking resist! Again, our mixing style has changed a bit, yet we are constantly learning and improving. Many thanks go to another unnamed DJ for supplying most of the music and much of the inspiration, and Oh! Lest we forget, Miss P. for moral support and late-night assistance in the art department. We trust that you will enjoy this compilation as much as we suffered making it and must warn you: pre-production of ‘Cyberia 4’ has already begun…

Thank YOU for your continued support and remember: Music piracy is ILLEGAL!”

BBS News: HMVHumourList

BBS_news-header

For those of you that don’t know, this SysOp also runs a HumourList, the material being gathered – sometimes sorted into collages – and then emailed in bulk as individual attempts at humour on a rather irregular basis. The material is generally the best of what comes my way…

If you’d like me to include you (or others!) on the HMVHumourList, please feel free to drop me a line.

BBS News: THE STATE OF THE ON-LINE NATION

BBS_news-header

For those few of you that remain and remain interested, BBSs are long and surely dead in this country, thanks to Windows95+ and the internet. Evidence can be viewed in the current list of South African BBSs.

The HMVH Corporation BBS is sure to befall a similar fate but will – for the time being – remain online only to maintain its relatively huge FileBase which shall sometime be converted to some or other WWW-format, even if only as an FTP site. Online we shall remain!

Enjoy the speed while it lasts!

Cyberia Version 2.01: The Hardcore Material

cyberia_header1

Whereas sibling and numerical predecessor “The Radio Mixes” featured primarily radio-friendly material, the poorly subtitled “The HardCore Material” was the real catalyst into an electronic mindset consisting of hard, thumping monotony — played at such repetitious rates to result in headaches and involuntary visits to Cyberia that it often wasn’t possible to differentiate between the real world and this new, largely unexplored domain. At times it became more real than reality itself, and somehow — for reasons that made no sense at all — it felt better. It felt good. It felt right.

What was real? What actually existed, and what was imagination, fiction, or pretence?

Blurb: “‘Cyberia (The HardCore Material)’ constitutes the second half of a double entrance into what will invariably become a series of the best club mixes this CJ (Computer Jockey) can get his paws onto.
