Modern Movie Consumption 2
When I first started writing this essay it was intended as a personal dig into the home entertainment industry that, through technological progress, rendered my humble DVD collection worthless and made consumers either re-purchase or abandon their home movie collection. As it turns out, that’s not quite the case. Consumers are overwhelmed with options. It’s not a battle between streaming vs. physical. We’ve almost reached a point where it’s possible to casually view a movie via streaming services, pay for it on video-on-demand, borrow it from a library, hunt down copies on physical media (new or used), and, for die hard fans and collectors, pre-order and invest in elaborate box set or steelbook editions by boutique labels. Everyone’s catered for. Continue reading

Hail to the kings of movie soundtracks
Last Saturday I closed a loop that had started 40 years ago: I watched the movie Footloose. Some of you may remember that the movie as well its soundtrack were huge hits in 1984; the catchy title song, in particular, was all over the radio and TV. It was almost as big as previous year’s Flashdance. Kenny may have been dubbed the “King of Movie Soundtracks” in the eighties but it was ultimately Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer who were pulling the strings. Continue reading

More media madness, obviously!
Earlier this month I finished my wife’s artist portfolio website. Obviously it includes a store. Obviously you check out the competition while setting up shop, and obviously it doesn’t take long to discover the stranger side of Etsy. Continue reading
Modern Media Consumption
Now that I’ve finally gotten rid of that horrid analogue video media format named “VHS”, I’ve been thinking about what comes next. I’m referring to an all-digital format — an ethereal one that exists not even as files on your hard drive. Truth be told, I’m not really sure — because definitions of “the Cloud” vary. What I am getting at is much more sinister, and I’m not sure I like what’s coming. Continue reading

#ExplainAFilmPlotBadly
Once in a while there’s a trending topic on Twitter that just grabs everyone’s attention. Last weekend the #tt was “Explain A Film Plot Badly”. Imaginations run wild, plots become riddles. The trend goes viral. Continue reading
Internet killed the video star
While ripping what’s left of my VHS collection I was reminded of the tedium of physical media. No sooner had I transferred the first batch of videos onto my digital media player’s hard disk did it occur to me how convenient it is to pick a selection from an à la carte menu and play whatever I had fed the device with. Rufus + Google + Monsters = August, part 1
South Africa’s troubles and unique social peculiarities have apparently reached a regular audience far beyond the country’s borders. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can be quite the science! Continue reading
R.I.P. V.H.S. – part II
In the interim, here’s a few more scans of my old VHS “artwork”. I’m holding on to those for the time being, and maybe someday I’ll just scan and post the whole lot somewhere before committing those to a bonfire, or something. Continue reading
