The beginning of a season called Winter

Winter has officially begun.

The car’s thermometer has reported its lowest temperature so far at -1°C.

Now that’s it’s practically illegal to operate a vehicle without pneumatics that suit the current weather, fitting winter tires seemed like a sensible and necessary precaution. Co-inciding with the opening of a local A.T.U branch conveniently located down the road from home and some 400€ later, it’s a set of Continental 195/65 R15 91T WinterContact TS 810 ML “takkies” that’ll provide the necessary traction through the coldest of seasons.

What amused me was that the sales guy initially tried to flog me another, very similar set of Continental tires that cost more than the ones they had on offer. When confronted about the justification for the hefty price difference, the answer was that “the ones you’re getting are only rated up to a speed of 190km/h”.

Erhmmm, OK? It’s not exactly like I was planning to zoom along the autobahn in snowy conditions at anything above 140km/h in any case…

First snow

In further exciting news, the GPS device is turning out to be a real boon to anyone travelling outside of the regular commuting routine. Becker may have recently released their Traffic Assist Highspeed II (with an improved screen and other features I don’t care to remember) but my trusty “old version 1” device has been doing a marvellous job guiding us through the beautiful and mountainous terrain of Baden-Württemberg, the Swabian Alb and Black Forest areas. Surprisingly, the city of Stuttgart itself is punctured with tunnels, and it is there that the navigations skills of the prim lady on the dashboard go haywire when she loses satellite synchronisation and requests you to make U-turn (“if possible”) upon U-turn before getting her bearings straight again.

Nevertheless, we did find the very impressive and educational Mercedes-Benz Museum, and thoroughly enjoyable we did find it, too!

As for the sound system: MP3 capabilities are simply a must in today’s world.

The degraded, less-than-CD quality of lossy compression is almost offset by the convenience of not having to change discs every hour or so, and the setup competes well enough with the noisy environment called car. It still lacks that certain OOOPMH, though!

And today’s a beautiful day… blue sky and sunshine.

How do I undo the damage I have done?

After popping another 30A fuse in a desperate attempt to get some bass from the car’s boot into the passenger cabin, it was decided to listen to my own advice and reclaim some space in the process by… well, by undoing what I had spent many long hours labouring over: the subwoofers in the box with amplifiers mounted on them was removed.

Without a trace. The cables stayed. Tucked away. Just in case.

All that remains is a new Panasonic CQ-C7301N head unit that refuses to connect to the Panasonic CD changer but has a silly motorised display in all sorts of fancy colours and cute animations and at least plays MP3s. That be its saving grace, else it’d be back to the old factory-fitted, needs-no-silly-adapters-and-fits-in-beautifully-and-supports-the-changer-and-plays-tapes Blaupunkt system.

Like I’ve said before: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Another interesting function is the unit’s ability to utilise the “lesser-quality” back-door speakers as simulated subwoofers, which it does to good effect. Otherwise it sounds just fine – but nothing more, and it most certainly won’t rattle the number plates off the car.

Shiny and unassuming head unit

At this point I wonder how my aged old non-ISO JVC system would’ve sounded?

Argh, fuck it! It works, leave it alone. “I’ll think of something else. I always do.”

A recent hard drive crash has resulted in the loss of most pending jokes and other future collections. This, combined with a change of personal interests, has become a bit of marker for a significant change in purpose, function, layout, and content of this site that will take place over the next few months or so.
Fear not, for entertaining and certainly worth repeated visits it will remain!

Watch this space for details!

Not impressed

Umpteen hours and a full week of hard installation work have paid off… NOT!

Beats me why but I just cannot get the system to sound right.

Sure, the head unit’s a fine gadget with a nifty bunch of features but the sound quality is just plain shite. What emanates from the existing door speakers is okay, it’s just the bass that simply isn’t coming through from the boot — no matter how much it’s cranked and despite blowing a 30A fuse in the process. The harmony just ain’t there, although it all sounds fine in the laboratory environment otherwise known as the basement.

The beautiful beast

Facing it the other way makes no difference

Seems that this Jetta is better insulated than my last one.

The damn job is finished!

Finding space for all the cabling and other shit that tends to emanate from the rear of a head unit can be a mission and a work of art sometimes that makes one wonder who the fuck designs this stuff?

Companies want — or rather need — to protect their own interests and products, and thus the VW-installed goodies fit like the proverbial glove. You want something else, something foreign, it’s “fuck you Charlie, you’re on your own!”Alternately, we have a fine range of add-on products… please step on in and have your credit card ready.

And hence, there are plugs and adapters that other companies can get rich on and idiots like me end up buying. Well, fuck ’em all. The system’s wired up and working. All it needs is a bit of fine-tuning since each car and system’s acoustics are different. The car itself has been washed and cleaned and vacuumed and ready to take me back to work tomorrow morning.

Those were my few days off, and the wife’s pissed off with me as well.

I need a holiday after this vacation.

I don’t mind the sun sometimes and all the images it shows

Were it not for darkness kicking in sooner than in the previous months, we’d be finished.

All the components are in and ready to be hooked up. One little snag is that there are a whole bunch of cables and adapters and plugs and relays that need to be stashed away in a very tiny space that an actual car radio head unit also wishes to occupy. Doing so requires vision, and vision is best during the daylight hours.

No light to work in a small space

Saturday brought no unexpected surprises except for the laws laid down by one fellow named “Murphy” and the idiot at the car wash trying to short-change me of ten bucks.

Let’s finish this damn job…

Chequered flag in sight

Most of today’s progress involved driving around and a bit of shopping (since shops are closed on Sundays and only open half of Saturday) and I really need to have this all finished by Sunday, and that includes a proper wash (and that goes for the car, too).

Nevertheless, we’re pretty much on schedule, and today was the day that the backboard for the Kenwood 6×9 speakers was cut, sawed, covered, and mounted. Irritatingly, my jigsaw packed up in the process — which brings us to another parallel with the past: that very AEG jigsaw was purchased way back in 1998 at the same time and at the same place as my old JVC system, specifically for the then-to-be-built backboard. Luckily the neighbour had one available on very short notice…

Let’s see what surprises Saturday has in store for us.
